2020 Northern Nevada Modified Tour Recap

The Northern Nevada Modified Tour presented by Duel in the Desert raced 4 shows in 3 days over the weekend of August 21-23, 2020. Champions were crowned in the Modified, SportMod, and Hobby Stock “run what ya brung” division.

Modifieds and SportMods were battling for some Duel in the Desert loot: each points champion receives a provisional to their respective main event on Saturday night, 2 pit passes for the week, and 2 VIP suite tickets, along with a Bulletproof Tees custom hauler mat.

The tour arrived at the high-banked Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon, Nevada to kick off the weekend on Friday the 21st. 13 SportMods checked in, with Bakersfield, California’s Jason Bannister driving from the 8th starting position to the win. Another Bannister took a feature win in the Hobby Stock division. Tyler Bannister started 13th in the 16-car field and managed to drive to the win. 22 Modifieds made the call with Chris Nieman taking the victory in a dominating performance.

The 17-car Hobby Stock field brought a few new competitors with Moab, Utah’s Nugget Shupe holding on to take a victory. The Modified field shrunk to 17 with Mesa, Arizona’s Chaz Baca taking the win from the outside of row 1.

After a quick show in Winnemucca, the tour headed an hour down the road to Battle Mountain, Nevada’s Battle Mountain Raceway on Saturday evening. The SportMod field stayed at 14 with Bakersfield’s Kevin Johnson holding off his brother Michael to take a coveted feature win. The Hobby Stocks had a full field of 24 with Tyler Bannister taking his second win of the weekend from the 10th starting position. The Modified field went up to 19 cars with Baca sweeping the main events of the day after Cory Sample faced some mechanical issues.

Summit Raceway in Elko, Nevada held the championship round on the afternoon of Sunday, August 23rd. 9 SportMods made the trip over the complete the championship round with Yuma, Arizona’s Miles Morris holding on to grab the main event victory over Michael Johnson. 19 Hobby Stocks competed in the final main event, with Nugget Shupe picking up another victory on the weekend. 17 Modifieds raced in the final round of the tour, with Winnemucca’s Cory Sample taking the win from the pole in dominant fashion.

The Top 3 in Modified points were very competitive all weekend. Chris Nieman won the points championship by 1 point over Cory Sample. Chaz Baca was a close 3rd, 3 points behind Nieman. Malen Gonzalez and Bobby Horton completed the top 5.

Kevin Johnson was able to take advantage of his brother Michael DNF’ing on the first night, as Kevin took the points championship by 5 points over his brother and Miles Morris. Jason Bannister and Jimmy Ray Huffmon rounded out the top 5.

Tyler Bannister dominated the weekend in the Hobby Stock division, with finishes of 1st, 2nd, 1st, and 4th. He took the points championship over Johnny Wood, Jimmy Berhorst, Kyle Wood, and James Coots. Berhorst was the only competitor in the top 5 not from Bakersfield, as he represents Silver Springs, Nevada.
